We shoot video on DVCam, Beta SP, mini DV tapes, and on XDCam disks and
recorded directly to solid state media.
WHY SO MANY FORMATS?
We offer a variety of cameras and formats in order to match the needs
and budgets of our customers. If the project is simply to
document a meeting, one of our smaller camera packages is a cost
effective way to proceed.
If the finished video
will be shown on a plasma monitor or projected on a large screen, then
one of our High Definition formats is probably the best choice.
Other projects fall somewhere in the middle. Suffice it to say
that we have a camera format and price point to fit any need.
Regardless of the format, the most important decision to make on any
project is choosing a skilled cameraperson with the right support
equipment.
CAN MAINSTREAM COMBINE
FOOTAGE FROM DIFFERENT FORMATS DURING THE EDIT?
Most of our projects involve footage from a variety of sources.
That includes still images, stock footage,
graphics, and even customer-provided video, taped with small consumer
cameras.
WHEN HIRING A SHOOTER AT A
REMOTE SITE, WHAT CAMERA FORMAT WORKS BEST?
For standard definition, the most widely accepted industry standard is
DVCam. Mini DV is a slightly lower quality universal format, but
be aware that most mini DV camcorders have somewhat limited user
control of audio and video.
WHAT ABOUT THE NEW SMALL
HD CAMERAS I SEE IN THE BIG BOX STORES?
These are highly compressed HD formats. Most of these cameras are
intended for home use. They normally come with their own very
limited proprietary editing software, intended for use on your home
computer. This footage can be cumbersome to import into
industry-standard editing platforms.
Sometimes, getting
“HD” footage at a bargain price may result in more time in the edit
suite.
HOW CAN I CONTROL EDIT
COSTS IF I AM ON A TIGHT BUDGET?
The best way to start is to ask us. Our advice is free, and we
are always more than happy to make suggestions. Even if the
project doesn’t end up here, we’ll do our best to advise you.
All production companies charge an hourly fee for editing, so time is
money. When we shoot the footage, you can rest assured that the
edit will begin with time code numbers that will keep edit time to a
minimum. If you are providing footage, take the time to carefully
review it and provide detailed notes. Better yet, spend an hour
or so with us in the edit suite to ensure that we understand exactly
what you want. Carefully planned projects are cost effective.
Still not sure which format to ask for?
Just Ask Mainstream.
